Installing an Interior Door- A Stepwise Approach
There are two main types of doors- pre-hung doors, and slab doors. While the former is a ready-to-install door that comes with its frame, the latter variant comes with just the door, and requires a little more elbow grease for installation!
That being said, let’s take a look at the stepwise interior door installation process of both these variants-
Prepare the doorway
The first step is to prepare and smoothen the doorway. Remove any old trims, and clean them thoroughly to establish a strong foundation.
Fix the hinges
If it’s a slab door, you’ve to fix the hinges in position first! If it’s a pre-hung door, the hinges come fixed with it. You just have to position the door properly before fixating it.
Leveling and shimming
In the case of a slab door, make sure that it swings freely. Use shims to adjust the position of the door (if needed). And in the case of a pre-hung door, use shims to perfectly level it with the doorway. Also, for pre-hung doors, you need to fixate the frame to the wall studs with screws.
Install the strike plate
For both kinds of doors, install the strike plates on the door jamb. Make sure that the strike plate is aligned with the latch of the door.
Install door handles, locks, and trim
For both door types, install the door handle and the lock. Adhere to the manufacturer’s instructions for a seamless installation process. And finally, install door trim around the doorway to cover up any leaks or gaps. And you’re done!
